🚗 Is your foreign driving licence exchangeable in France?

1 min read

Translated from Bengali.

Whether you are a refugee or not—not every country’s driving licence can be exchanged for a French licence. France must have a permis exchange or réciprocité agreement with the country that issued the licence. Since 2019, this condition also applies to réfugié and persons with protection internationale.

✅ The country must be on the official exchange list

✅ The licence must be valid and genuine

✅ The licence must have been obtained before starting residence in France

✅ In general, the application must be made within the set time limit after the first titre de séjour or séjour validation

✅ If required, a French translation and attestation des droits à conduire must be provided

✅ The application is made through France Titres–ANTS

⚠️ A Bangladeshi driving licence is currently not directly exchangeable for a French licence. In that case, you generally need to take the Code de la route and conduite tests in France to obtain a new permis.

🎓 If you have an Étudiant titre de séjour, under certain conditions you may drive with a foreign licence during your studies, but this should not be considered an automatic right to exchange.

💶 From 12 May 2026, a 40-euro timbre fiscal is required for foreign licence exchange applications.

Beforehand, check the file to see whether your country’s licence is exchangeable and whether the deadline is still valid.
